William V of Holland
William V of Holland was born on March 28, 1748, and became the last stadtholder of the Dutch Republic. He ruled from 1751 until 1795, a period marked by political turmoil and conflict. As a member of the House of Orange-Nassau, he was a key figure in the struggle between the traditional power of the stadtholder and the growing influence of republicanism in the Netherlands.
During his reign, William V faced challenges from both internal factions and external threats, particularly from revolutionary France. In 1795, he fled to Great Britain as the French invaded, leading to the establishment of the Batavian Republic. His departure marked the end of the stadtholderate in the Netherlands.
