Wild Reindeer
Wild reindeer, also known as caribou in North America, are large herbivorous mammals found in the Arctic and subarctic regions. They are well-adapted to cold environments, with thick fur and a layer of fat for insulation. Reindeer are known for their impressive migrations, traveling long distances in search of food, particularly lichen, which is a primary food source during winter.
Both male and female reindeer grow antlers, which is unique among deer species. These antlers are used for foraging and during mating displays. Wild reindeer play a crucial role in their ecosystems, influencing vegetation patterns and serving as prey for predators like wolves and bears.
