White Rajahs
The term "White Rajahs" refers to a series of British rulers who governed the state of Sarawak in Borneo during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The most notable of these was James Brooke, who became the first Rajah after helping to suppress piracy in the region. The White Rajahs ruled with a mix of local customs and British colonial practices, significantly influencing the culture and economy of Sarawak.
The Brooke family continued to rule Sarawak until World War II, with Charles Brooke and Anthony Brooke succeeding James. Their reign is often characterized by efforts to modernize the region, including infrastructure development and the promotion of education. The White Rajahs left a lasting legacy in Sarawak, which remains evident in its unique blend of cultures today.
