White Citizens' Council
The White Citizens' Council was an organization formed in the southern United States in 1954, primarily in response to the desegregation of public schools following the landmark Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education. The council aimed to maintain white supremacy and resist civil rights advancements by promoting segregation and opposing integration efforts.
Members of the White Citizens' Council included local business leaders, politicians, and other influential figures who used economic and social pressure to intimidate African Americans and civil rights activists. The council was known for its public meetings, propaganda campaigns, and efforts to influence local policies, contributing to the broader climate of racial tension during the Civil Rights Movement.
