Wheeling Suspension Bridge
The Wheeling Suspension Bridge is a historic bridge located in Wheeling, West Virginia. Completed in 1849, it spans the Ohio River and connects Wheeling Island to the mainland. The bridge was designed by engineer Charles Ellet Jr. and is notable for its unique suspension design, which was innovative for its time.
This bridge is 1,010 feet long and was the first to use a wire cable suspension system in the United States. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark and remains an important symbol of engineering achievement and local history in the region.
