Whakatāne River
The Whakatāne River is located in the eastern part of the North Island of New Zealand. It flows for approximately 90 kilometers, starting from the Kahikatea Forest and winding its way through the town of Whakatāne before emptying into the Bay of Plenty. The river is known for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities, including fishing and kayaking.
The river plays a significant role in the local ecosystem and is culturally important to the Māori people, particularly the Ngāti Awa iwi. It supports various wildlife and plant species, contributing to the biodiversity of the region. The Whakatāne River is also a vital water source for the surrounding communities.
