Westray Mine
The Westray Mine was a coal mine located in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It opened in 1991 and was operated by the Westray Coal Company. The mine was intended to produce high-quality coal but faced numerous safety issues from the start.
Tragically, on May 9, 1992, a methane gas explosion occurred in the mine, resulting in the deaths of 26 miners. This disaster highlighted serious concerns about mine safety regulations and led to significant changes in mining laws in Canada. The Westray Mine disaster remains a pivotal event in the history of mining safety.
