Western Tiger Swallowtail
The Western Tiger Swallowtail is a large butterfly found in western North America. It is easily recognized by its striking yellow and black striped wings, which resemble the pattern of a tiger. Adults typically have a wingspan of 3 to 5 inches and are often seen fluttering around gardens, meadows, and near water sources.
These butterflies primarily feed on nectar from various flowers, including lilacs, milkweed, and butterfly bush. The larvae, or caterpillars, are green and can mimic the appearance of bird droppings for camouflage. The Western Tiger Swallowtail plays an important role in pollination, contributing to the health of ecosystems.
