Western Horned Lizard
The Western Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) is a small, flat-bodied reptile found primarily in the western United States and parts of Mexico. It is easily recognized by its distinctive horn-like projections on its head and its spiny skin, which helps it blend into its arid surroundings. These lizards typically inhabit deserts, grasslands, and scrublands, where they feed mainly on ants and other small insects.
This species is known for its unique defense mechanisms, including the ability to flatten its body and remain motionless to avoid detection. When threatened, the Western Horned Lizard can also expel blood from its eyes as a means of deterring predators. Conservation efforts are important for maintaining their populations, as habitat loss poses a significant threat to their survival.
