The West African lion is a subspecies of the African lion, scientifically known as *Panthera leo*. This lion is primarily found in the savannas and grasslands of West Africa, with populations concentrated in countries like Senegal, Ghana, and Nigeria. They are smaller than their East and Southern African counterparts and are characterized by a less developed mane in males.
