Welsbach Mantles
Welsbach mantles are small, fabric-like structures used in gas lamps to produce light. They are made from a mixture of materials, including cerium and thorium, which glow brightly when heated by a flame. The mantles are designed to withstand high temperatures and enhance the efficiency of the light produced.
Invented by Carl Auer von Welsbach in the late 19th century, these mantles revolutionized outdoor lighting. They replaced traditional gas lamps that used simple flames, providing a brighter and more reliable source of illumination. Today, Welsbach mantles are still used in some camping lanterns and outdoor lighting applications.
