War of the Sicilian Vespers
The War of the Sicilian Vespers was a rebellion that began in 1282 on the island of Sicily against the rule of the Angevins, a French dynasty. The conflict was sparked by a violent incident during a local event, leading to widespread uprisings. The Sicilians sought to reclaim their independence and restore the rule of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, which had previously governed the island.
The war resulted in a protracted struggle, with the Sicilians receiving support from the Crown of Aragon. By 1302, the conflict concluded with the Treaty of Catania, which recognized Sicilian independence and established the Aragonese as the new rulers of Sicily. This event significantly altered the political landscape of the Mediterranean region.
