Virginia Convention
The Virginia Convention refers to a series of meetings held in Virginia during the American Revolution. These conventions were crucial for discussing and deciding on matters of governance, particularly in response to British rule. The first convention took place in 1774, leading to the formation of the Virginia Committee of Correspondence, which helped coordinate resistance against British policies.
The most notable of these gatherings was the Second Virginia Convention in 1775, where Patrick Henry famously declared, "Give me liberty, or give me death!" This convention played a significant role in mobilizing support for the revolutionary cause and ultimately led to Virginia's declaration of independence from British authority.
