Vaquita
The Vaquita is a small porpoise species found only in the northern part of the Gulf of California in Mexico. It is the world's rarest marine mammal, with an estimated population of fewer than 30 individuals. Vaquitas are known for their distinctive dark rings around their eyes and a light gray body, making them unique among marine mammals.
Threatened primarily by illegal fishing practices, particularly the use of gillnets for catching totoaba fish, the Vaquita faces a critical risk of extinction. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species, but challenges remain due to ongoing illegal fishing activities in its habitat.
