Utah War
The Utah War (1857-1858) was a conflict between the United States government and the members of the Latter-day Saint movement, commonly known as the Mormons, in the Utah Territory. Tensions arose when President James Buchanan sent federal troops to suppress what he perceived as a rebellion by the Mormons, who had established a theocratic government in the region.
The conflict involved little actual fighting, as the Mormons, led by Brigham Young, chose to avoid direct confrontation. Instead, they engaged in strategic retreats and scorched-earth tactics, ultimately leading to a peaceful resolution. The war highlighted the challenges of governance in newly settled territories and the complexities of federal and local authority.
