Urmia Lake
Urmia Lake is a large saltwater lake located in northwestern Iran. It is one of the largest lakes in the Middle East, covering an area of about 5,000 square kilometers. The lake is known for its high salinity, which is much greater than that of seawater, and it is home to various salt-tolerant organisms.
Over the years, Urmia Lake has faced significant environmental challenges, including water diversion and climate change, leading to a dramatic reduction in its size. Conservation efforts are ongoing to restore the lake's ecosystem and address the issues threatening its health and biodiversity.
