Urethral Sphincters
Urethral sphincters are muscles located around the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. There are two main types: the internal urethral sphincter, which is involuntary and helps control the flow of urine, and the external urethral sphincter, which is voluntary and allows a person to consciously start or stop urination.
These sphincters play a crucial role in maintaining urinary continence, preventing involuntary leakage of urine. Proper functioning of the urethral sphincters is essential for bladder control and overall urinary health, and issues with these muscles can lead to conditions such as incontinence.
