United States Colored Troops
The United States Colored Troops (USCT) were regiments of African American soldiers who fought for the Union during the American Civil War. Established in 1863, these troops played a crucial role in various battles and campaigns, contributing significantly to the Union's victory. They were formed after the Emancipation Proclamation, which allowed African Americans to enlist in the military.
The USCT included over 180,000 soldiers, many of whom were formerly enslaved individuals. They faced discrimination and harsh conditions but demonstrated bravery and skill in combat. Their service helped pave the way for the eventual acceptance of African Americans in the U.S. military.
