United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent)
The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), often abbreviated as ULFA(I), is a separatist militant group based in the northeastern Indian state of Assam. Formed in 1979, the group seeks to establish an independent Assamese state, advocating for the rights and identity of the Assamese people. ULFA(I) emerged from a desire to address issues such as economic disparity and cultural preservation.
The organization has been involved in various armed conflicts and has faced significant opposition from the Indian government. It is designated as a terrorist organization by India, and its activities have led to ongoing tensions in the region. The group is also linked to broader movements for autonomy in the northeastern states of India, which include various ethnic and cultural groups.
