Union Territories
Union Territories (UTs) are regions in India that are governed directly by the Central Government. Unlike states, which have their own governments, UTs may have varying degrees of administrative autonomy. Some UTs, like Delhi, have their own legislative assemblies, while others are administered by a Lieutenant Governor or an Administrator appointed by the President of India.
There are currently eight Union Territories in India, including Chandigarh, Puducherry, and Ladakh. The status of a Union Territory can change, as seen with Jammu and Kashmir, which was reorganized into a UT in 2019. UTs often have unique cultural and historical significance, contributing to India's diversity.
