Uniform Resource Names
A Uniform Resource Name (URN) is a type of identifier used to uniquely identify a resource without specifying its location. Unlike a Uniform Resource Locator (URL), which provides a means to access a resource, a URN focuses on the resource's identity. URNs are often used in namespaces, such as the ISBN for books, allowing for consistent identification across different systems.
URNs are part of the broader framework of Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs), which also includes URLs. They are designed to be persistent and location-independent, making them useful for long-term resource identification. URNs help ensure that resources can be referenced reliably, even if their location changes over time.
