Underglazes
Underglazes are decorative coatings used in pottery and ceramics that provide color and design before the final glaze is applied. They are typically made from a mixture of clay, water, and colorants, allowing artists to paint or apply intricate designs on the surface of their work. Once applied, the piece is fired in a kiln, which helps to set the colors.
Unlike traditional glazes, underglazes do not create a glossy finish on their own. Instead, they are often covered with a clear glaze to enhance their appearance and protect the artwork. This technique allows for greater creativity and detail in ceramic art.
