Ulster Defence Regiment
The Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) was a part-time military unit of the British Army, established in 1970 during the period known as the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Its primary role was to support the regular army in maintaining peace and security in the region. The UDR was composed mainly of local volunteers and aimed to provide a community-based response to the violence and unrest.
The regiment was involved in various operations, including patrolling and checkpoint duties, and faced significant challenges, including attacks from paramilitary groups. In 1992, the UDR was merged with the Royal Irish Rangers to form the Royal Irish Regiment, marking the end of its distinct identity.
