USS Spence (DD-577) (1943)
The USS Spence (DD-577) was a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy, launched on December 18, 1943. It was designed for anti-submarine warfare and surface action, featuring advanced radar and weaponry for its time. The ship was named after Admiral William Spence, a notable naval officer.
During World War II, the USS Spence served in the Pacific Theater, participating in several key operations, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Tragically, the ship was lost during a typhoon in December 1944, resulting in the deaths of many crew members. The wreck was later discovered in 1990.
