USS Skipjack
The USS Skipjack (SSN-585) was a nuclear-powered attack submarine of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1959. It was the first submarine designed with a teardrop hull shape, which improved its speed and maneuverability. The Skipjack was primarily used for anti-submarine warfare and intelligence gathering during the Cold War.
The submarine was named after the skipjack tuna, a fast and agile fish. It served until its decommissioning in 1990, completing numerous missions and contributing to the development of submarine technology. The Skipjack class included several other submarines, enhancing the U.S. Navy's underwater capabilities.
