USS Nautilus
The USS Nautilus was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine, launched by the United States Navy on January 21, 1954. It was designed to operate underwater for extended periods without the need for surface refueling, thanks to its nuclear reactor. The submarine could travel at high speeds and had a significant impact on naval warfare and submarine design.
On August 3, 1958, the USS Nautilus made history by becoming the first vessel to reach the North Pole underwater. This achievement demonstrated the capabilities of nuclear submarines and marked a significant milestone in maritime exploration. The submarine was decommissioned in 1980 and is now a museum ship at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut.
