USS Pargo (SS-1)
The USS Pargo (SS-1) was the first submarine of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1900. Designed for underwater warfare, it was a part of the early development of submarine technology. The vessel was named after the pargo, a type of fish, and was primarily used for training and experimental purposes.
The Pargo was a small, one-hull submarine, measuring about 53 feet in length. It was powered by a gasoline engine for surface travel and had a limited battery capacity for submerged operations. Although it was not involved in combat, the USS Pargo played a significant role in advancing submarine design and tactics for future naval operations.
