USS Holland (SS-1)
The USS Holland (SS-1) was the first commissioned submarine of the United States Navy, launched on May 6, 1897. Designed by John Philip Holland, it was a pioneering vessel that introduced the concept of underwater warfare. The submarine was powered by a gasoline engine on the surface and a battery-powered electric motor when submerged.
Holland had a length of 53 feet and could carry a crew of six. It was capable of diving to a depth of 75 feet and had a top speed of 8 knots on the surface. The USS Holland played a crucial role in the development of future submarines in the U.S. Navy.
