USS Essex (CV-9)
The USS Essex (CV-9) was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, commissioned during World War II. Launched in 1942, it played a significant role in the Pacific Theater, supporting various operations and battles, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The ship was known for its speed and ability to carry a large number of aircraft.
After the war, the USS Essex was modernized and served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. It was decommissioned in 1975 and later scrapped. The ship was named after the earlier USS Essex, a notable frigate from the War of 1812.
