It was named after Rear Admiral Daniel Callaghan, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Guadalcanal. The ship served primarily in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was commissioned on June 30, 1945.
After the war, the USS Callaghan continued to serve in various capacities, including operations during the Korean War. The destroyer was decommissioned in 1970 and later sold for scrap. Throughout its service, the ship earned several battle stars for its contributions to naval operations.
