Tutin
Tutin is a toxic substance derived from the nectar of certain plants, particularly those in the Euphorbiaceae family. It is primarily found in the honey produced by bees that collect nectar from these plants. When ingested in large amounts, tutin can cause serious health issues, including nausea, vomiting, and even neurological effects.
The most notable source of tutin is the tutu plant, native to New Zealand. Honey containing tutin is often referred to as tutu honey, and its consumption is regulated due to the potential health risks associated with the toxin. Beekeepers must monitor honey for tutin levels to ensure safety for consumers.
