Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands
The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) was a United Nations trust territory established after World War II. It included several island groups in the Pacific Ocean, such as the Mariana Islands, Caroline Islands, and Marshall Islands. The United States administered the territory, focusing on economic development and self-governance for the local populations.
In 1994, the TTPI was dissolved, and its regions transitioned to self-governing status. The Freely Associated States that emerged include the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. These agreements allow for continued U.S. financial assistance and defense support while granting the islands greater autonomy.
