Trophoblastic Tumors
Trophoblastic tumors are a group of rare tumors that arise from trophoblastic tissue, which is involved in pregnancy. These tumors can develop from abnormal growth of cells that normally form the placenta. The most common type is gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, which can occur after a pregnancy, including a miscarriage or molar pregnancy.
These tumors can be classified into several types, including choriocarcinoma and placental site trophoblastic tumor. Symptoms may vary but can include abnormal bleeding and elevated levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Treatment often involves chemotherapy, and the prognosis can be favorable with early detection.
