Trobriand Islanders
The Trobriand Islanders are an indigenous group living in the Trobriand Islands, located off the southeastern coast of Papua New Guinea. They are known for their unique culture, which includes vibrant customs, traditional dances, and intricate handicrafts. The society is matrilineal, meaning lineage and inheritance are traced through the mother’s side.
The Trobriand Islanders are also famous for their complex system of trade and exchange, particularly through the Kula ring, a ceremonial exchange network involving the trading of shell necklaces and armbands. This practice fosters social relationships and reinforces community ties among the islands.
