Trichechus senegalensis
Trichechus senegalensis, commonly known as the West African manatee, is a large aquatic mammal found in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas of West Africa. This herbivorous species primarily feeds on aquatic plants and plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by promoting plant growth and water clarity.
The West African manatee can grow up to 4 meters in length and weigh between 400 to 600 kilograms. It has a robust body, paddle-like flippers, and a flat tail, which help it navigate through water. Unfortunately, this species is threatened by habitat loss, hunting, and pollution, leading to its classification as vulnerable by conservation organizations.
