Translocations
Translocations refer to the process of moving individuals or groups of organisms from one location to another, often to enhance conservation efforts. This method is commonly used to help endangered species, such as the California condor, by relocating them to areas where they can thrive and reproduce.
In genetics, translocation describes a chromosomal abnormality where a segment of DNA is transferred from one chromosome to another. This can lead to various genetic disorders or cancers, such as chronic myelogenous leukemia, where a specific translocation creates an abnormal fusion gene that promotes uncontrolled cell growth.
