Traditional Japanese Houses
Traditional Japanese houses, known as minka, are characterized by their wooden structures and sliding doors called fusuma. These homes often feature tatami mat flooring, which is made from rice straw and provides a natural, comfortable living space. The design emphasizes harmony with nature, often incorporating gardens and open spaces.
The roofs of minka are typically steeply pitched and may be thatched or tiled, allowing for efficient rainwater drainage. Interiors are minimalist, reflecting the Japanese aesthetic of simplicity and functionality. Traditional houses often include a tokonoma, an alcove for displaying art or flowers, further enhancing the connection to nature.
