Tonttu (Elf)
A Tonttu is a mythical creature from Finnish folklore, often associated with Christmas traditions. These small, elf-like beings are known for their helpful nature, particularly in taking care of farm animals and homes. Tonttus are typically depicted wearing red hats and are believed to bring good luck and prosperity to households.
In Finnish culture, Tonttus are closely linked to the celebration of Joulu, or Christmas. They are thought to protect the family and ensure a bountiful harvest. Children often leave out food for Tonttus, hoping to receive gifts in return, similar to the traditions surrounding Santa Claus.
