Tonkin
Tonkin, also known as Bắc Kỳ, is a historical region in northern Vietnam. It is bordered by China to the north and the Gulf of Tonkin to the east. The area is known for its rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and significant agricultural production, particularly rice.
The term "Tonkin" was widely used during the colonial period, especially by the French, who established control over the region in the late 19th century. Today, Tonkin is part of Vietnam and includes major cities like Hanoi, the capital, which serves as a political and cultural center for the country.
