Toba Caldera
The Toba Caldera is a large volcanic caldera located on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It was formed by a massive eruption approximately 74,000 years ago, which is considered one of the largest volcanic eruptions in Earth's history. The caldera is about 100 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide, and it contains Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world.
The eruption that created the Toba Caldera had significant global effects, including a volcanic winter that may have led to a dramatic reduction in the human population. Today, the area is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and the unique culture of the local Batak people.
