Thurston Lava Tube
The Thurston Lava Tube is a natural tunnel formed by flowing lava in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It was created when the outer layer of lava cooled and solidified while the molten lava continued to flow beneath it. This unique geological feature is approximately 600 years old and stretches about 600 meters long.
Visitors can explore the lava tube, which is known for its impressive rock formations and unique ecosystem. The tube is named after Lorrin Thurston, a local businessman who helped promote the park. Walking through the tube offers a glimpse into the volcanic activity that shaped the Hawaiian Islands.
