Third Set of Locks
The Third Set of Locks is an expansion project of the Panama Canal, designed to accommodate larger ships known as New Panamax vessels. Completed in 2016, this set of locks allows for increased maritime traffic and improved global trade efficiency by enabling bigger cargo ships to transit between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
The project includes two new locks, one on the Atlantic side and one on the Pacific side, each featuring three chambers. The Third Set of Locks significantly enhances the canal's capacity, doubling the amount of cargo that can be transported through this vital waterway.
