The Stratosphere
The Stratosphere is the second layer of Earth's atmosphere, located above the Troposphere and below the Mesosphere. It extends from about 10 to 50 kilometers (6 to 31 miles) above the Earth's surface. This layer is characterized by a gradual increase in temperature with altitude, primarily due to the presence of ozone, which absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun.
In the Stratosphere, commercial airliners often fly at altitudes between 10 and 12 kilometers (6 to 7 miles), where the air is more stable and less turbulent. The ozone layer, a crucial part of this region, protects life on Earth by filtering harmful UV radiation. Understanding the Stratosphere is essential for meteorology and climate science.
