Mesosphere
The mesosphere is a layer of Earth's atmosphere located above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere, extending from about 50 to 85 kilometers (31 to 53 miles) above sea level. In this layer, temperatures decrease with altitude, reaching as low as -90 degrees Celsius (-130 degrees Fahrenheit). The mesosphere is where most meteoroids burn up upon entering Earth's atmosphere, creating bright streaks of light known as meteors.
This atmospheric layer plays a crucial role in protecting the planet from space debris and is also where noctilucent clouds can form. These clouds are rare and appear at high altitudes, often glowing in the twilight. The mesosphere is less studied than other layers, making it an area of ongoing research in atmospheric science.
