The Lions of Lucerne
The Lions of Lucerne is a famous sculpture located in Lucerne, Switzerland. Carved into a sandstone rock face, it depicts a dying lion, symbolizing the bravery and sacrifice of Swiss Guards who were killed during the French Revolution in 1792. The monument was designed by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and unveiled in 1821.
