The Last Poets
The Last Poets is a collective of poets and musicians formed in 1968 in Harlem, New York City. They are known for their powerful spoken word performances that blend poetry with music, particularly jazz and African rhythms. Their work addresses social issues, including racism, poverty, and the struggles of the African American community, making them influential figures in the Black Arts Movement.
The group originally consisted of members like Jamal Joseph, David Nelson, and Abiodun Oyewole. Over the years, various artists have joined and left the collective, but their core message remains focused on empowerment and resistance. The Last Poets have inspired many contemporary artists and continue to perform and record music today.
