The Heavenly Kings
The Heavenly Kings, known as the Four Heavenly Kings, are figures in Buddhism who protect the world and uphold the teachings of the Buddha. Each king is associated with a cardinal direction: Vaiśravaṇa in the north, Virūḍhaka in the south, Dhrtarāṣṭra in the east, and Kumāra in the west. They are often depicted in art and sculpture, guarding temples and sacred spaces.
In addition to their protective roles, the Heavenly Kings are also seen as guardians of the Buddhist faith. They symbolize the strength and power needed to overcome obstacles on the path to enlightenment. Their presence serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and protection in spiritual practice.
