The Digger Movement
The Digger Movement was a 17th-century group in England that emerged during the English Civil War. They believed in the idea of common land and sought to promote social equality by cultivating land that they claimed was owned by everyone. The movement was founded by figures like Gerrard Winstanley, who argued that land should not be privately owned but shared among all people.
The Diggers set up communities, known as "Digger colonies," where they farmed and lived collectively. Their activities were often met with resistance from landowners and authorities, leading to confrontations. Despite their efforts, the movement was short-lived, but it left a lasting impact on ideas about land rights and social justice.
