The British Raj
The British Raj refers to the period of British rule in the Indian subcontinent from 1858 to 1947. It began after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, leading to direct control by the British Crown over India, which was previously managed by the British East India Company. The Raj significantly influenced India's political, social, and economic structures.
During the British Raj, India experienced major changes, including the introduction of railways, telegraphs, and modern education systems. However, this period was also marked by exploitation and resistance, culminating in the struggle for independence led by figures like Mahatma Gandhi. The British Raj officially ended in 1947, resulting in the partition of India and Pakistan.
