Thai Pusam
Thai Pusam is a Hindu festival celebrated primarily by the Tamil community, particularly in Malaysia and Singapore. It honors Lord Murugan, the son of Shiva and Parvati, and marks the occasion when he received a divine spear to defeat the demon Soorapadman. The festival typically occurs in January or February during the full moon.
During Thai Pusam, devotees engage in various rituals, including carrying kavadis, which are ornate structures that symbolize their devotion. Many participants also perform acts of penance, such as piercing their skin with hooks and skewers, as a way to seek blessings and fulfill vows. The festival is marked by vibrant processions and communal celebrations.
